| "How a Garden Saves the Earth" Written for preschoolers to third graders, “How a Garden Saves the Earth” is a story about Posey, who grows her own fruits and vegetables, and Reed who buys his produce at the supermarket. It follows the experiences of each child during the different journeys of their food and the environmental effects of those choices.
Related facts are introduced with fun illustrations. For example, when Posey’s family shares her harvest with Reed’s, their pets say: “Did you know a garden can produce about 300 pounds of fruits and vegetables a year? That’s about how much a baby elephant weighs!”
The 24-page, soft cover book is dedicated to helping parents, teachers and homeschoolers educate kids -- and themselves -- about the importance of locally grown, sustainable food and how it is connected to the health of their families, their communities and the environment.
The authors also include "A Note to Grownups" section that provides more details about what they can do to increase the consumption of whole foods in their homes and schools, as well as ways to support local, sustainable agriculture. They offer the original sources to the fun facts presented for further reference, too.
“How a Garden Saves the Earth” is self-published and written by Trent and Linda McNair, founders of Surf City Growers, a small organic nursery located in Aptos, California. The imagery is by published illustrator, Jeff Petersen.
The book serves as a perfect accompaniment My First Organics seed starting kits. A copy of the book is included in both the Classroom and Homeschool Bundles, along with lesson plans for preschool to 3rd grade educators. |
